What Is The Throat Chakra?
The Throat Chakra, or Vishuddha, is our fifth energy hub among the 7 primary chakras in our body.
If you don’t know what the chakras are, click here for a brief overview.
It is located at the center of our throat and the color of this energy hub is blue. It is element of ether, which is the space in between space.
Physically, this chakra controls our neck, jaw, mouth, and face.On a deeper level, the throat chakra controls everything that has to do with personal expression. It controls how well we express our personal truth, communicate with others, and handle conflict.
A balanced throat chakra speaks our personal message with truth, compassion, and assertion. It is unafraid of communicating boundaries or expressing an opinion.
The Throat Chakra Influences
When The Throat Chakra Is Blocked
When the throat chakra is blocked, we feel insecure when expressing ourselves. We feel like we have to be quiet and are unsure of what we say when we speak, making us indecisive.
Physically, if we struggle with acne, it can be because of a blocked throat chakra. (Acne could also be because of a blocked sacral chakra.) Other physical symptoms of throat chakra imbalance are neck tension, teeth grinding, and a chronic sore throat.
4 Aspects Of Throat Chakra Balance
There are 4 key aspects of a healed throat chakra.
Healing your throat chakra means that you will feel a sense of confidence, clarity, honesty, and kindness in the words you speak. You can communicate to others with compassion yet assertion, you know what you want and how to ask for it, and you have the ability to listen to others and understand them.
How Do I Know If I Have A Throat Chakra Blockage?
At some point, all of us have felt like we can’t express our needs or opinions. We have all at times felt unheard or misunderstood or like our voice is unwanted. (I know I have.)
Here are some of the most common ways we an tell if we have a throat chakra blockage.
- We feel insecure when we talk to others
- We stumble on our words because we are worried people won’t like what we say
- It is hard for us to handle conflict and we can’t stand our ground
- We are indecisive and have trouble knowing what we want
- We feel uncomfortable expressing of our needs because we feel like we’re a burden
This being said, almost everyone has a throat chakra blockage, for some it’s larger than others. That means, we can all benefit from throat chakra healing.
10 Ways To Practice Throat Chakra Healing
Healing the throat chakra enables us to step into our unique self expression, speak our truth, and connect with others on a deeper level. Here are nine things you should do to heal your vishuddha.
1. Practice Creative Self-Expression
The first step to having an empowered throat chakra is to find our creative self-expression. Whether it is dancing, singing, writing, poetry, painting, drawing, filming, acting, or playing music, spend time in a creative outlet that makes you feel expressive, confident, and heard. Here are 3 ways to practice creative self-expression.
1. Have A Dance Party
Dancing is extremely beneficial for our physical and mental health. Make time in your week to just dance freely by yourself and practice vulnerable self-expression.
Write about something that matters to your or that you love. Whatever makes you feel expressive! It could be poetry, blogs, a memoir, a fictional story, anything!
Painting is a great way to practice creative self-expression! A specific art activity I love to do is emotional expression painting, where you create a color code, each color symbolizing an emotions, and use the color code to create a painting that represents how you feel.
2. Communicate Boundaries
I know, “easy peasy”, right? If you have been allowing yourself to be pushed around or settle for less than you deserve, now is the time to communicate those scary boundaries that need to be set. If it helps, I recommend writing them down first and repeating them out loud. Feel confident in what you are saying.
3. Use Throat Chakra Healing Crystals
An easy way to incorporate throat chakra healing is by simply holding crystals in meditation and throughout the day that heal the throat chakra. One of the best to use is Angelite.
4. Use Throat Chakra Affirmations + Mantras
Mantras and affirmations are a great way to open your throat chakra. Create a mantra that reminds you to express yourself.
5. Eat Foods For The Throat Chakra
Each chakra has corresponding foods that heal them. Foods for the throat chakra include ginger, blueberries, and tree fruits. Interesting fact, the reason tree fruits are considered throat chakra healers is because a fruit won’t fall off the tree until it is ready just as the throat chakra won’t speak until it is ready.
6. Tune In To Your Inner Wisdom
So how do you actually learn to listen to your inner wisdom? This is actually a very simple thing to learn.
This is a 4 step guide to tuning in to your inner wisdom…
1 // Silence
We first have to make space for our inner wisdom to show itself. We do this by regularly finding silence. Sit at the beach, in a quiet room, in nature, and do nothing. Think about whats bothering you for a moment, something that is on your mind, or a problem you don’t know how to deal with. Bring awareness to it and let it go. Let silence sink in with no distractions.
2 // Listen
Now your inner wisdom will start coming out of hiding. All you have to do is listen. What is it telling you? Is it giving you advice? Answers? Is it comforting you? Is it uncovering a truth?
It will be hard at first to hear your inner wisdom but, with repetition, you’ll be able to hear your inner voice with instantaneous ease. Practice sitting in silence and noticing your inner wisdom. See how fast you can hear it.
The final step is speaking your inner wisdom. When the time comes that you need your inner wisdom fast, you’ll be able to act in alignment with it.

Staring at or wearing the color blue can be a gentle reminder to open your throat chakra. I have a specific blue bracelet I wear when I feel like i need a reminder to express myself. Practice staring at the sky, the ocean, a lake or waterfall and visualize your throat chakra energy being like the water, flowing.
9. Do A Throat Chakra Meditation
Meditate on opening your throat chakra. Visualize blue light glowing bigger and bigger at the center of your throat and filling you with confidence to express your desires, opinion, and communicate with others. You can also meditate and visualize expressing yourself through something creative or picturing yourself communicating a boundary to someone.
10. Journal For The Throat Chakra
When trying to heal a throat chakra blockage, a very powerful activity to try is journaling.
Some people may find the process of journaling easier to communicate verbally with a close friend/partner rather than in writing. Whichever way you prefer, the point is to notice and release emotions.
Here are 3 throat chakra journal prompts on expression to get you started.
- What feeling or frustrations do I have right now that are bothering me or taking up a lot of space in my head? Write whatever words comes to mind. Take all the words that you wrote above and try form it into a clear sentence expressing how you feel and what it is exactly that is bothering you.
- What is something that inspires me? Write about why it is inspiring.
- Write a poem to express how you feel.
You deserve to feel the infinite power of love every single day.
But you can’t do that when you hold the weight of your pain and need for acceptance.
