Why Does My Wing Matter?

Your enneagram wing determines your behaviors. See the difference? Recognizing your wing can also help you avoid mistyping! If neither of the wings seems to resonate with you, then you might have mistyped.

We are comparing the 9w8, known as “The Referee,” versus the 9w1, known as “The Dreamer.” By knowing your wing, you can live in better alignment and fulfill your core desire with ease.

Enneagram 9w8 vs 9w1
Here is your guide to the Enneagram 9w8 versus 9w1.

Enneagram Type 9 Overview

The enneagram type nine is called the peacemaker. Your core desire is to have inner peace and harmony around you. As a 9 you are peaceful, easygoing, gentle, and friendly. Your core desire comes from the fear that if there is a conflict then you will be abandoned and alone. Arguing with people and asserting your needs don’t come naturally to you.

But depending on your wing, how you go about fulfilling this core desire for peace and harmony will be different. If you are a 9w8, you need more socialization and challenge to feel inner peace whereas, if you are a 9w1, you find your inner peace through an organized, peaceful environment.

Enneagram 9w8 vs 9w1 Comparison

In the enneagram, one wing is considered more “extraverted” and the other more “introverted” this doesn’t mean you have to be an introvert or extravert to be a certain wing, it just means you are going to have louder or quieter tendencies depending on which wing is dominant. The 9w8 is the extraverted wing that needs socialization more than the 9w1 counterpart.

People in the enneagram community say that the goal is to have balance in your wings but we disagree (to some extent). You should have space in your life where you embrace each of your wings but it doesn’t matter if they are balanced. We believe that it’s extremely important that we know our dominant wing.

Enneagram 9 Wing Balance
In the enneagram, one wing is considered more “extraverted” and the other more “introverted”

The reason for this is that your wing plays a big role in lifestyle and habits. By knowing your wing, you can know what kind of habits and what way of life will bring you peak happiness.

Especially for you, wonderful type 9! You know that your core desire is to feel harmonious and peaceful and that your growth is to step into the ambitious and driven nature of a 3, but do you know where in your life you want to achieve that core desire?

This is going to be the more extroverted wing and they take on the appearance of the challenger in some aspects, meaning that they seem assertive, loud, protective, sarcastic, and energetic. 9w8s are extremely social and they don’t back down from a fight, this can seem a bit like a paradox knowing their core desire but it actually is aligned.

As a 9w8, you have a hidden desire for challenge. If you are a 9w8, it is vital that you are challenging yourself whether it is physically or mentally and making time to be with people who get you to challenge yourself.
