Your enneagram wing determines your behaviors. See the difference? Recognizing your wing can also help you avoid mistyping! If neither of the wings seems to resonate with you, then you might have mistyped.
We are comparing the 6w5, known as “The Defender,” versus the 6w7, known as “The Buddy”. By knowing your wing, you can live in better alignment and fulfill your core desire with ease.

Enneagram Type 6 Overview
The enneagram type six is called the Loyalist. Your core desire is to have security, safety, and loyalty. As a 6, you are dedicated, protective, cautious, and moral. Your core desire comes from the fear and belief that the world is dangerous and will harm you. Thinking positive and being a daredevil don’t come naturally to you.
But depending on your wing, how you go about fulfilling this core desire of having security and safety will be different. If you are a 6w5, you need more routine and alone time to feel safe whereas, if you are a 6w7, youneed safety first and then you want to go have fun!
Enneagram 6w5 vs 6w7 Comparison
In the enneagram, one wing is considered more “extraverted” and the other more “introverted” this doesn’t mean you have to be an introvert or extravert to be a certain wing, it just means you are going to have louder or quieter tendencies depending on which wing is dominant. 6s with a wing 7 are much louder than their w5 counterpart.
People in the enneagram community say that the goal is to have balance in your wings but we disagree (to some extent). You should have space in your life where you embrace each of your wings but it doesn’t matter if they are balanced. We believe that it’s extremely important that we know our dominant wing!

Our wing plays a big role in lifestyle and habits. By knowing our wing, we can know what kind of habits and what way of life will bring us peak happiness.
Especially for you, wonderful type 6! You know that your core desire is to be safe and that your growth is to step into the calm and easygoing nature of a 9, but do you know where in your life you want to achieve those core desires?

Enneagram 6w5
The biggest difference between the 6w5 and 6w7 is the 6w5’s core desire is to be safe and has a strong desire to have alone time. If you’re a 6w7, you care more about things being safe than being able to go party!
The 6w5 is called “the defender.” This is the more introverted wing and they take on the appearance of the investigator in some aspects. They seem rational, fact-oriented, reserved, and quiet.

So you do things your way and love to stick to routines. You like to stick with what you know works. Don’t even try to change a 6w5’s way of doing things. (Type 8s, we’re talking to you.)
If you are a 6w5, it is vital that you are scheduling time to be alone and do the things you love (and don’t do often enough).

Enneagram 6w7
Like I said earlier, if you’re a 6w7, you want to make sure things are safe and then go party! It is extremely important to the 6w7 that they have present stability and entertainment.
The 6w7 is called “the buddy.” This is the more extroverted wing. They take on the appearance of the enthusiast in some aspects, meaning that they seem social, loud, talkative, friendly, and fun.

As a 6 wing 7, you care more about having loyal friends and connections rather than having facts and information.
Type 6w7s prefer to have a bigger social circle, so it is vital that you are making time to be with friends you can trust. The wing 7 means you value fun so allow room for that fun side of you to show.

Noticing Your Wing Throughout Your Day
Throughout your day, practice noticing when you’re embracing your 5 wing and when you’re embracing your 7 wing.
Do you feel safer and happier when you have space to be alone or do you feel better when you are around others and being social?
Do you have a better idea of what your wing is? Hopefully, you do! Thanks for reading.
