Why Does My Wing Matter?

Your enneagram wing determines your behaviors. See the difference? Recognizing your wing can also help you avoid mistyping! If neither of the wings seems to resonate with you, then you might have mistyped.
We are comparing the the 4w3, known as “The Aristocrat,” verses the 4w5, known as “The Bohemian”. By knowing your wing, you can live in better alignment and fulfill your core desire with ease.
Enneagram Type 4 Overview
The enneagram type four is called the individualist. Your core desire is to be unique and original. As a 4, you are artistic, emotional (in a good way), expressive, quirky, and possibly melancholy. Your core desire comes from the fear that if you aren’t unique then people will forget about you. Going with the masses and hiding your emotions don’t come naturally to you.
But depending on your wing, how you go about fulfilling this core desire of uniqueness and being the best will be different. If you are a 4w3, you’re looking express that individuality on stage whereas, if you are a 4w5, you care less about being in the spotlight and want to express your individuality in quiet ways.
Enneagram 4w3 vs 4w5 Comparison
In the enneagram, one wing is considered more “extraverted” and the other more “introverted” this doesn’t mean you have to be an introvert or extravert to be a certain wing, it just means you are going to have louder or quieter tendencies depending on which wing is dominant. The 4w3 is the extraverted wing and is much louder than the 4w5 counterpart.
People in the enneagram community say that the goal is to have balance in your wings but we disagree (to some extent). You should have space in your life where you embrace each of your wings but it doesn’t matter if they are balanced. We believe that it’s extremely important that we know our dominant wing.
The reason for this is because your wing plays a big role in lifestyle and habits. By knowing your wing, you can know what kind of habits and what way of life will bring you peak happiness.
Especially for you, wonderful type 4! You know that your core desire is to be unique and original and that your growth is to step into the level-headed and organized nature of a 1, but do you know where in your life you want to achieve that core desire?

The biggest difference between the 4w3 vs 4w5 is the 4w3’s core desire is to express their uniqueness in front of big audiences whereas, if you’re a 4w5, you care more about knowing what your uniqueness is and expressing it in quieter, more introverted ways away from the people whether that is art, writing, poetry, etc.
The 4w3 is called “the aristocrat.” This is going to be the more extraverted wing and they take on the appearance of the achiever in some aspects, meaning that they seem social, loud, competitive, and ambitious. They love being on stage and under the spotlight. 4w3s are extremely social and they love to flaunt their individuality anywhere there are people watching.
As a 4w3, you care more a lot about your image. You are always refining and defining your style whether that is through the clothes you wear or your instagram bio. You also have a strong desire to achieve goals more than the 4w5.
4w3s love to be social. If you are a 4w3, it is vital that you are making time to be with people who allow you to put down your perfectly made image. Be with people who make you feel understood and not like an outcast.
Like I said earlier, the 3w4s core desire is to know their uniqueness and express it in quieter ways away from the crowd. It is extremely important to the 4w5 that they have alone time to process their feelings and do their creative hobbies.
The 4w5 is called “the bohemian.” This is going to be the more introverted wing and they take on the appearance of the investigator in some aspects, meaning that they seem quiet, calm, eccentric, withdrawn, and curious.
As a 4 wing 5, you care more about spending time creating rather than expressing your creativity on a stage and achieving your goals. You love to write stories, write poetry, journal, read, draw, paint, build, etc.
Type 4w5s prefers to have fewer but deeper friendships than big social groups so it is vital that you are finding those people who you feel understood, welcome, and authentic around.
